The ancients regarded incense as their friend while reading and their companionship when alone. Clothes needed fragrance, and quilts needed warmth. Incense accentuated the solemnity of the court, and adorned the elegance of the pine pavilion. While tuning the strings and playing the zither, a stick of incense could soothe the heart and guide the rhythm. Drinking tea, playing chess, discussing philosophy, and gathering with friends through calligraphy and painting—what would be the point without fragrance? This is how ancient scholars and incense interacted.
