 Tips for Reducing Carbon Emissions

The next step in calculating your carbon footprint is crucial: reducing emissions!

The 4Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Replace—are simple.

Follow these simple tips consistently and you can easily protect the environment and save money.

Reducing Waste

Reduce your use of air conditioners or heaters. Every degree you lower the temperature, the energy consumption of an air conditioner increases by 6%. Using a fan instead of the air conditioner for four hours a day can reduce annual carbon emissions by 1,130 kg and save money.

Remember to turn off and unplug lights and appliances when not in use. Standby use can account for up to 10% of household electricity consumption, equivalent to 100 kg of carbon dioxide annually.

When driving, try to slow down to avoid unnecessary acceleration and deceleration. The more aggressive your driving style, the more fuel you use. Gasoline vehicles emit 2.7 kg of carbon dioxide for every liter of gasoline consumed.

Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth for two minutes under a running tap uses ten liters of water, as well as the electricity required to process and pump the water.

Avoid flying. Airplanes are the most polluting form of transportation, with each passenger emitting 5.7 tons of carbon monoxide on a round-trip trip from Hong Kong to London.

Reuse

Bringing your own takeaway containers and cutlery can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 3.5 kilograms per year.

Recycle cardboard and other containers. Every ton of cardboard saved reduces carbon emissions by four tons.

Fill plastic bottles with water and store them in the refrigerator to use as ice packs; plastic bottles can also be used to grow plants. Every ton of plastic bottles recycled reduces carbon emissions by 1.5 tons.

Reuse wrapping paper. Over one million households in Hong Kong use a large amount of gift wrapping paper each year, equivalent to cutting down tens of thousands of trees.

Recycle

Recycle paper after using both sides. Every ton of paper produced is equivalent to cutting down 24 trees. Take used batteries to a nearby MRT station for recycling – discarded batteries in landfills leak chemicals, contaminating the soil and groundwater, rendering nearly 600 tons of water undrinkable.

Exchange unused household items with friends and family or donate them to charity. Recycling a T-shirt can reduce over 6 kg of carbon dioxide emissions; recycling a mobile phone can reduce emissions by nearly 50 kg.

Recycle old newspapers or read newspapers online – every ton of newspapers recycled saves 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Swap your taxis and cars with public transportation like buses, minibuses, and the MRT. Using public transportation can reduce carbon emissions by over 5 kg.

Replace your tungsten light bulbs with longer-lasting fluorescent or LED bulbs. Fluorescent and LED bulbs last 15 times longer than tungsten bulbs and consume nearly 80% less electricity. If you use six light bulbs for six hours a day, switching to more environmentally friendly options can save you 552 kg of carbon emissions annually. Replace disposable containers with reusable beverage bottles. Tetra Pak cartons are not recyclable, and their production produces a significant amount of carbon dioxide. Drinking one less carton per day can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 7 kg.

Shorter showers save water and electricity. Showering just five minutes less per day can reduce annual carbon emissions by 8 kg.

Hang clothes outdoors to dry instead of in a dryer. A high-efficiency clothes dryer consumes 1.8 kilowatt-hours of electricity per hour, equivalent to running 45 light bulbs for an hour.
